Argentines Lose Interest in US, See China as Strategic Partner

Argentines Lose Interest in US, See China as Strategic Partner

A new public opinion poll reveals a silent but consistent shift in the geopolitical mindset of Argentines: while admiration for the United States as a country model plummets, the assessment of China as a convenient strategic partner grows, even breaking ideological barriers. The data comes from the fifth 'Social Beliefs 2025' report, prepared by the Pulsar UBA Observatory of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, which analyzes the local view of the world and national self-perception. According to the Argentine News Agency (NA), in 2024, 33% of respondents chose the US as a 'mirror,' but that figure fell to 15% in 2025. China's positive image reached 62% (up 5 points), slightly surpassing the United States, which stands at 59% (down 3 points). The UBA study also warns of a significant distortion between the reality and Argentines' perception of their own country, generating pessimism. On average, responses rank Argentina 102nd out of 200 in economic performance; the actual World Bank ranking is 23rd; a gap of about 80 steps reveals an underestimation of the country. 66% believe that even with education and work, it is not possible to achieve a good economic position in Argentina. Nearly 40% of young people think about leaving the country; the intention to emigrate is 37% among supporters of La Libertad Avanza vs. 31% among Peronist sympathizers.
